LAHORE: Government on Monday faced a setback as Lahore High Court (LHC) rejected the petition seeking disallowance of the protests against the federal government scheduled for January 17.
Hearing the petition filed by Advocate AK Dogar, Justice Shahid Karim recommended forming a larger bench to hear the case.
Dogar had maintained in the petition that staging the sit-in was in violation of Act 124 of Pakistan Penal Code barred the people from ‘assaulting President, Governor, etc., with intention to compel or restrain the exercise of any lawful power’.
He requested that the court should rule against the protests so that the anarchy in the country could be avoided. Justice Shahid Karim rejected the plea but recommended forming a larger bench.
It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan Awami Tehreek had announced the launch of its movement against the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz government on January 17 citing the Model Town tragedy while Pakistan People’s Party and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf have decided to join the protests.
