In a late night statement on Thursday, Dutch far-right politician Geert Wilders cancelled the blasphemous caricature contest, citing threats to his and others safety.
The Dutch politician, who heads the anti-immigrant Party for Freedom, maintained in the statement emailed to several international media outlets that he had decided to ‘not to let the cartoon contest go ahead’. He continued, “The threats resulting from the cartoon contest are running out of control.”
He said he did not want others lives endangered because of the contest planned to be held at the offices of his political party in the Dutch parliament building in November.
Earlier this week, the police in Hague had arrested a man for allegedly threatening Wilders. Speaking to the media, Hague police spokesman Jan Rensen said that the suspect posted a threatening message against the parliamentarian on social media platform Facebook. Because of threats received earlier over his anti-Islam rhetoric, Wilders has remained under round-the-clock police protection for several years.
Earlier, left-liberal French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo remained in the limelight for its content deemed sacrilegious by many Muslims across the globe.
The liberal-left as well as the far right in Europe defend their actions by associating them with the universal human right to freedom of expression. Their critics point out that freedom of expression is not absolute, and that there is a very real problem of Islamophobia in Europe, which in many ways mirrors the actions of far-right Islamists in Muslim countries, like the Tehrik-e-Labbaik in Pakistan.
